i think one of the biggest problems is that a lot of mid-level (or lower) 'artists' care more about getting pound notes in the till than doing good work.
i'm lucky in that there is a very helpful, well known artist in my local town and when i went to them with a design they basically said no way. they reasoned it in that what i wanted wouldn't last without deforming and they weren't prepared to put their name to it. they went on to reel off a load of other local places that would be more than happy to do it but repeated their reasoning for not doing it (along with their reasoning for turning away about half the people that come through the door looking for work that just wouldn't last or look 'right')
give a good artist an idea and a nice canvas to work on and sometimes, the results can be awesome - other times.......
