Another thread that rapidly spiraled out of control.

I think Grounddoggys initial post was meant to be helpful, and what he said could happen, probably did happen. In my naivety I hadn't thought of it before, so I am wiser.
It didn't matter in this case, because they were always going to go for a lot more than knobby's initial bid anyway.

I'm not condoning anything that was subsequently posted though.

I wasn't the one who 'resorted' to name calling if you take the time to read the thread. I offered some advice to a member who posted a double bid and pointed out the issues of said double bid. I presume MOST already know this basic info. For those who didn't already know it I thought I might EDUCATE.

For that I am called all sorts of names. There is NOTHING wrong with placing a bid a I am willing to pay. In fact there is everything RIGHT about placing that bid. If I am an engaging in a 'bid up' strategy on somebody who has placed a double bid I am betting they did not 'set a trap' for me as I also laid out (as you approach your limit bid the minimum more and others might think you have bid SUFFICIENTLY more and be scared off).

Please realize I am SHARING ACCEPTED AND FAIR TACTICS with the forum. Don't blame me for others making STUPID double bids and others taking advantage of their STUPIDITY.

Sometimes a double bid is STRATEGIC. If you bid up a STRATEGIC DOUBLE BIDDER then you might get burned by paying a price higher than you really wanted to pay - but as long as you PAY IT what is the issue?

Bottom line - LEARN TO BID SMART or PAY FOR IT.

Is that really too unfair for people to accept? I find that hard to believe. I have already said I don't use this forum to use tactics like this. I extend a COURTESY to RB members and I even offer to educate them.

Well thanks Johnnyboy, I WAS trying to help knobby. Fat lot of good it does HERE where you have Auction Nannies running around trying to dictate how everyone else should bid.

I guess I'll keep auction tips to myself from now on. The wise will learn from their mistakes - the idiots will continue to flounder. I've made mistakes bidding. I've overpaid. I've lost items. I've also learned.

I would hope others might share some of their techniques but obviously this forum is too concerned about some 'Auction Fairy' creating some level playing field. I suppose that is what Euro-Socialism does to people. Nobody is responsible for their own actions anymore. Everybody expects a bailout.

I don't get all this tactics on an ebay auction. If someone bids it up for laffs thinking they're teaching somebody a lesson, I doubt it'll work as few will bother to even check auction bids etc and just pay whatever they are told to pay.

Just set a snipe for the max for what you want to pay and be done with it.

Tactics are largely irrelevant when bidders place a single maximum bid - and that is a key point. That is a SMART bid.

Placing a bid and then deciding an hour later you'd pay an extra $20 is STUPID. It is an invitation to be bid up. That was my point.

...and I am never bidding an item up 'for laughs'. If I put in a winning bid I pay it. However, if I see a person who has made an error and left themselves open to being bid up I see no harm in bidding them up as long as I am willing to pay the price should I win the auction.

I'm actually a little surprised this is a 'new' discussion. This is basic common sense auction strategy.

If this site as a whole is as uninformed about auction tactics as this thread would lead me to believe then you need a new forum on Auction Tactics.
