I was the first and currently highest bidder on this item. There is only one other bidder...someone off here? If not, then what do others think of the bidding? Could it be that the vendor is fishing for my maximum bid?

I've just had a look and discovered that the other bidder's history shows that 92% of his activity has been with this vendor? I don't want to contact the vendor with my concerns and scare him off as I really want the fork.

Well if you really want it, and the price isn't offensive to you - but that's not to say it hasn't been artificially inflated, and still may go a lot higher than it would have, with subsequent bids.

If you look closer at that history, the bidder has made 14 bids in the last 30 days. 13 of those bids are on these forks (which gives the 92%), so I don't THINK there is anything dodgy going on here.
Looks more like he's just probing (had a flashback of Mountain Mayhem then!) to see how much you've bid

Why did you raise your bid a couple hours after your first bid? Allow me to point something out to those of you who may not naturally think like this.

You have just set yourself up to pay at least the max of that initial bid if somebody chose to make you pay it. There is little risk to them of actually winning the item but they can sure as hell bid you up just for kicks.

I've done it on parts I've been outbid on just to make the guy who outbid me twice pay a bit more. I could do it to you if I wanted to be a d!ck. You haven't hit the max of your first bid yet. You have bid at least 68 GBP and a second bid likely a couple pounds higher. Unless your second bid is just a wee bit higher than your initial bid somebody could just freely bid you up without fear of winning said item.

Now - if you are winning an item but nearing your max price then maybe you increase your bid the minimum in hopes of scaring off somebody who doesn't want to get soaked. You got to be careful about increasing your bid. Strategery is everything.

Basically I'm happy to pay the amount of my second bid. I thought my first bid would be overtaken easily...I'm always losing items to snipers.

Now why would you do that? It's an auction site, so being vindictive cos someone outbids you is really childish.

the forks sit at £80, but that is still cheep for them in that condition .i would not be suprised if they go for £150. there was a NOS set on american ebay a few month,s back that went for just over £200

It is an auction strategy. People who buy a lot of things at auctions are familiar with such tactics. Noobs might not understand
