They won’t crack if they are not used for the initial loading of the bearings.

- use a different stem cap to load the bearings
- tighten the steerer clamp on the stem
- remove wrong stem cap and fit repro version

Same principle with the originals too ;-) especially if the headset, stem, steerer isn't new.

Quite. A little mechanical sympathy goes a long way when dealing with 30+ year old bicycle parts.

We experimented with different variations (which mean nothing to me). Think around 10 were tried. And still experimenting today

Some failed by cracking , and some failed by being too soft.

To be on the safe side I’d recommend preloading with a metal cap and then add this decorative cap on afterwards.

However they do work to preload the bearings fine. If you continue to tighten them beyond that then of course they break. But the standard plastic one would do the same too.
