man i could really go for these, but 40 dollars to ship a 500g shoe box?

That's £26 in proper money. ;)

Depends upon how well he packs it. I've sent stuff to the US that weighed 1.1Kg and it cost me £20 by airmail.

A bit off topic but somewhat related:

I have a friend who just got a good deal on ebay for some bars and stem, and now the seller is telling him that he "might" get hit with a high import tax. My friend thinks the seller is trying to flake out.

What sort of import tax could he be talking about?

I got hit with import tax from the USA once and it wasn't cheap. I think it depends what the sender puts on the mail ticket. If you get it sent as a gift then there should be no problem (although not all sellers will do this :( )

Not all seller will do this because if something does goes wrong, there's little protection from paypal.

Funny, I had a guy on here tell me he would've rather I sent the thing with no insurance and as a gift, so that he didn't have to pay customs fees, then stated that he would've rather taken the chance of them being lost than paying the fees.

I highly doubt he would've been cool with them being lost. The way I see it, if you are willing to pay for a hard to find part, I'm sure you want to be sure of its arrival.

BTW, $26 is about what it cost to send cranks packaged well with insurance from the US (NY) to the UK. But if marked as a part and insured for it's full amount, it can be subject to certain fees on the other side :(

This "import tax" is just VAT!

I bought a car stereo years ago from the US, with shipping and VAT paid to the postman upon delivery, i paid in total 210pounds. Retail price in the shops here in the UK 499pounds 8) that was at the height of the pound / dollar.

Not all things are subject to VAT from outside the EU and it depends on the value and what it is.

I didn't pay any "import tax" on the crank i bought from the US and it was labelled "used bike parts"

If you buy goods online from a country outside the European Union, for instance the USA, Canada, China, Australia

You will be charged:

* Customs duty if the amount of duty is €10 (£7) or over
* Import VAT if the value of the goods is €22 (£18 ) and over
* Excise duty for some goods like alcohol and tobacco

I don't seem to be able to find what percentage the customs duty is though. :?
