The traditional green slime Swarfega should be ok.

The beaded versions not such a good idea.

They make two types  Well i never. learn some thing new every day
I tried Muck off. work really well :D

Used to use Cif foaming kitchen cleaner type stuff on car engines.. no scrubbing and just a quick rinse..

Think I'll go with Muc-Off for cleaning though, just have to cut down on the measures so there's some left . . .

If you want function and cheap you really cannot beat Diesel, £1.30 for a litre is quite cheap as far as degreasers go, and it's quite stable, more so than many other chemical household/garage products to use. In middle eastern countries they use it as an industrial degreaser on tap in garages. In my former company one of the machines had a bottle and tap to clean the blade with Diesel. It can leave an oily residue like white spirit does, but a quick rinse with soapy water and jobs a good'un :D

Ever seen what Muc Off does to anodizing if left on (even for a short space of time)? it's not a pretty sight !! use fenwicks it's MUCH gentler ,fwiw I use white spirit as well

Swarfega was originally for storing silk tights in so it should be quite gentle (the ingredients are similar but not quite the same as that formula)
