On a recent bike build for a friend, the entry level Shimano 8speed STI units (for V's) it turns out do not have a screw to bring the brake lever closer for those with a smaller reach.
These are only about 3 gentle rides old.
Ideally swap or p/x for any shimano 8 speed equivalents with lever reach adjustment.
