For my two penneth on the course of this thread:

I don't think this thread was the right place to make that spicy initial comment - regardless of how you did it, blunt, spicy, whatever

You may feel the comment was directly about the bikes, but it's just not how things are done here! People do talk honestly but not in a manner that can be construed as an attack

In any event people can't argue back and forth all over a thread like this without stealing it off the owner and making it all about the argument, as has just happened

If we did that his forum would degenerate into the mindless 'tit for tat' inane rubbish that most other forums contain

You should have kicked off a thread about the idea, no one here is afraid of debate, I can assure you

In fact I think you still should it's got to be worth exploring and you obviously have stuff you want to say

On reflection, this thread is beyond redemption so lets have that debate here!

This page seems to suggest that lightning struck twice

http://www.mtnbikehalloffame.com/page.cfm?pageid=13665

Some British dude INDEPENDENTLY came up with the off road bicycle concept and built them!

People rode bikes off road for as long as there were bikes. The modern industry grew out of Marin, i.e., what we now call mountain bikes (because Charlie Kelly called 'em MountainBikes).

That said, I don't really care about who did what first, I'm more interested in why the bikes posted by LGF (and I wish he would re-post the pics) are of particular note and not just etceterini (not that there is anything wrong with etceterini per se).

you're welcome.I call em as I see em
I rather like that - free to be wrong, but brandish it anyway...

Kudos.

what did your first comment have to do with with the real subject of the thread? at whom was it aimed?
Two things:-

1. It wasn't slamming the entire point of this thread or the subject matter in hand
2. Despite what you might think, it wasn't aimed at US members. It was merely a bit of subtle humour, after another comment by Dr S in the BOTM thread that was direct reply to LGF - and it was merely countering the perspective that (effectively) we'd better keep you guys from the US sweet, or you'd all leave, and retrobike would go to the dogs.

So not anti-US, which is what you're implying, but anti-the-argument that what the place needs is to keep one particular contingent happy, or it'll all go to pot.

Now whether you think that's out of place, or not, in this thread, 2 things:-

1. As I said, I didn't post to this thread to quash some reasonable discussion on the real subject of it
2. Much of the negative comments on here, seem to have stemmed from the previous "tension" in the BOTM thread, and with that context, seem just pure spite

I don't agree that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything. Presumably people want to learn about stuff that they are interested in. I know I do.
What has the first sentence got at all to do with the second?

I disagree with your disagreement - it's just plain churlish, to say nothing of being redundant. It's just another bandwagon, that I'm seeing more of, of late, that seems totally and utterly pointless.

If you have something better to discuss or post pictures of, then by all means, be the ball, Johnny. You post your thread and your pictures that are worth nice comments.

How does p1ss1ng on lamp-posts enhance learning? It doesn't, it's just plain ego.

There was nothing to be gained from your comments on LGF's bikes, than pure self-indulgence, and don't try and make out there was.

If you had / have a better point to make, a better thread to start, a better series of pictures, then by all means - roll the dice.

In the meantime, most thinking people who can cut through it, see the wood for the trees, and recognise a bandwagon when they see it, will see this encroaching mean-spiritedness that seems to be on the increase, for it's simple purpose.
What, are you LGF's mom?
Ya got me beat, there - that cut me to the quick.

Somehow, I just expected more...

Anyhoo, I added more verbiage later in the thread to clarify my spicy initial reaction.
And your initial reaction I've correctly surmised above.

It wasn't constructive criticism. It was purely dismissing the subject out of hand as being worthless. That's the sort of churlish, pointless posts that seem to be becoming almost fashionable of late, and I for one believe it's some stupid high-school-y, no-bandwagon-too-slow behaviour that adds nothing.

Constructive criticism is one thing, but mere ego-brandishing to try and look cool to some other, like-minded people?
