I've had this crankset hanging around for a few years and want to put it on a bike I'm building.

Can anyone identify it to help me choose the right BB length?

It's quite light at 620gms and the 170mm arms are marked F-7 and F-8

Looks remarkably like the one specced on a Raleigh maverick pro from 1987. I believe its also a copy of a TA crankset.

But I'm looking from my phone so it could also be a marsbar

Re:

LGF, thanks for that, I always forget about Velobase as a good source of info.

I'll just have to fit it on the bike with the current BB and see if I can assess from there what the correct BB length should be.

Re:

Following on from the original post I think that LGF was spot on with the axle length - I tried them with a 122mm BB and the inner ring was just touching the chainstay.

I have another query though. Now that they've been re-assembled I can see that the spacer between the inner two rings is narrower than the spacer between the two larger rings. I always assumed the spacing would be the same. Will they still shift OK? They're for use on a Dawes Discovery 701 hybrid.

Re:

Yes distance between rings can vary. I've measured quite a few in the last few months. I don't think there is a standard distance between granny and middle rings.

Re:

Assuming you've got a BB axle that works, you'll also have to look out for an old school triple mech which has a completely flat outer plate, such as Mavic, Suntour XC or a Deerhead Shimano XT.
There's very little space between the outer ring and the RH crank arm, so those new fangled mechs with their fancy schmanzy shaped and ramped outer plates just don't fit in the tight gap...

All the best,
