Jim, I would not call place to place records "enthusiastic riding", more fairly steady pedalling. Remember chain gears were in their infancy, but think of Opperman. I can remember in what passed as a 1949 NCU "massed start" round a local park one rider with an SA gear. Either paid to use them, or worked for raleigh was almost the only way SA were in competitions.
