Stupid ? About Freewheel Cog spacing

I have never paid much attention to the cog spacing of early 5, 6 speed freewheels, but I experienced some issues with a couple wheel sets that were shifting oddly. I noticed an obvious difference of spacing between cogs where the chain would not engage without over shifting; primarily from from higher to lower gear. I happened to be in the middlw cogs.

I had an old Regina BX that sounded like a castanets when I shook the wheel, but I figured I could use the cogs on another Regina with a good body, and maybe use the spacers to reset the other 2 clusters and mount to the good hub of that wheel.

One was a Maeda 888 Pro Comp 5 speed (excellent normally), the other a Sun Tour Perfect 6 speed. I tore them down and discovered the to ne assembled incorrectly wirh cogs moubted backwards, and 1 cog looked to be a replacement that I do not think was proper. It had an integrated spacer, but when I reassembled as best as I could the spacing seemed fairly close (not yet mic'd) so I am wondering what the proper distance should be (center to center or between the 2 faces. It is a corn cob 15, 16,17, 18, 19 so I think even spacing should be okay. I know with larger differential between cog sizes a little extra gap is given to avoid interference. Question is: what is the spacing for a 5 speed and a 6 speed.
The Perfect was also screwed up when assembled and has a dog's breakfast of various thick and thin spacers and shims. It appears to have all original cogs, but teeth count is odd so apparently another cog change or two: 14, 16, 17, 18, 21, 23. if I know what the correct distances are I should be able to sort things out. I saw 5mm & 5.5mm so a lityle xonfused, and no indication if c-c or inside dimension.

Thanks @daccordimark I looked at Sheldon Brown site but I must have used the wrong wording; showed me OLD rear fork spacing instead. I assume that if I make it narrower I can use a narrow chain versus a standard 5/6 spd chain. I'll reference those links you provided.
I do not work on older bikes so a bit ignorant. Just did the bottom bracket overhaul and to tweak the adjustment took a few times; used to cartridge types.

Edit: when I had viewed the S. Brown site I stopped scrolling down at the adertisement and neglect to go further to the cog crib sheet. An idiot I am, as Yoda would say!
