Stuck for a headset

Bit of a dilemma here - for various reasons mostly due to me being stubborn Im stuck for a headset for my build.

The spec is 1" ahead.

The rules are highish spec but not silly money.

No American kit. Ideally I'd like it UK or european but I'm not aware of anyone who made one.

Retro mtb preferably.

If I could magic one up it would be an Ahead version of the mavic 316 if they existed- that gives you some idea of what I'm looking for.

Any ideas?

Campag did a 1 inch head set, obviously shimano did in various models, xtr, xt, dx etc. lots of other non USA, tioga, sugino etc. you should be able to find something to suit.

Campagnolo Record road headsets are still available in 1". They are some of the best around, even having grease ports in the sides.

I forgot to mention suntour.

I think you can get threaded to ahead set converters that convert the top part of a threaded headset to ahead (swaps out the threaded bolt bit for a press fit).

Hi folks,

Thanks for some good suggestions.

Will do some research on campy miche and converters. I've also looked into getting ahead steerers threaded but that seems a bit of a pain.

The other make that came up when I looked was Stronglight - any thoughts on that?

Cheers

The top cap will still be threaded though?

Confused. The converter replaces all the threaded parts and comes with a top cap and star nut too, iirc. Never used one myself just seen topics on here about them.

Strong light make good headsets as far as I know. You could also look at bmx headsets as they come in 1 inch.

Campag Record and Chorus came in 1" threadless versions - both very similar but the Record model has grease ports. I've got one on my Stumpjumper, and it's been problem-free.

Stronglight made various 1" threadless headsets - there was an A9 threadless, a Headstrong and a Headlight - maybe others. I've used the Headstrong model, and it worked fine for me:

It's nicely made, with roller bearings and its own pinch bolt. The stack height is high though.
