stronglight chainset removal woes

Hi, anyone here had experience of removing stronglight 49D crank arms?, the thread inside the arm is larger than my standard crank extractor. So i wondered if anyone here has thought of a clever way of removing them (intact!), rather than by buying the expensive extractor on ebay!

Is it possible to screw in an M8 machine screw into the end of the bottom bracket shaft and then for the extractor to push on the screw head instead of the tip of the shaft?
