stripped thread in xt thumbie....

feetabix

Retrobike Rider
just taking apart a recent aquisition and found a stripped thread in left xt thumb shifter......its not a massive problem as the bar is tapered and the shifter will push up onto it but wondered if and how others have overcome this one......

Tap out the thread to one size larger and use an appropriate bolt.

OR, if your feeling adventurous, take off the shifter from the mount, drill a hole through from the top side and slide a bolt through so a nut can be fitted on the other side - means 2 tools to tighten/loosen though.

Don't do any of that yet - far too extreme. Just get a bolt that's 5mm longer. XT thumbies are threaded a long way into that hole and the original bolt only threads into the first bit.
The standard bike shop trick we used to use was to take the bolt that clamps the thumbie to the mount and swap it with the bar clamp bolt - the mount bolt is a little longer and normally fixes the job!

Try a LONGER bolt first before tapping it out....this was a problem with XT thumbies. See if you can find another bolt about 3-4 threads longer....if that doesn't work tap it out to an M1x6mm

I would have guessed a M6 would have a bolt head that is too big to fit in the pocket in the clamp?

Regardless, I've also tapped larger to 1/4"-20 with success... and that size bolt head does fit.

M6 isn't as big as you think it is....that's what they use for a cable anchor bolt on Dura Ace brakes these days. With the threads gone on a 5mm it doesn't take much to get to six and there are plenty of 6mm bolts with a small head

Good to know. I wasn't so much concerned about the bold diameter since that's only 1 mm bigger, but when I went to the hardware store to find a bolt to fix mine, all the M6's had huge heads on them which is why I went with the 1/4-20.

It's holding up well on my daughter's ride -- http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=65379

good evening gents.....just to update matters,i swapped the bolt with one from the bottle boss.....it was 2 mm too long but some attention with saw and file and the bolt fits snugly.....problem solved!!.....thankyou all oncemore.....
