Strange Carlton Frame

Thanks to another thread here I found this website, 'Vintage Bike Cave' who are purveyors of previously owned cycles and accessories. They show quite a selection for sale on their site and in the 'Frames' I saw this -

http://vintagebikecave.com/products/fra ... h-webbing/

I've never seen a Carlton like this and was wondering if any of our Carlton/Raleigh fans could shed any light. Perhaps it was a 'lunchtime own build' for someone.

I'll chip in before the experts come along.

To my eye that looks later than 1979. Even with a respray would someone really have all those braze-ons added, convert for AK brakes and add the webs?

That's sort of what I was thinking.

VBC.

The guy that owns the"cave"appears to have little real knowledge* and has joined the gravy train of guys seeing an opportunity in the market.

This lack of knowledge can of course work in the buyers favour, or against the buyer if he(or she)is a naive newcomer to what now seems to be a"scene"(yuk).

This"Carlton"is clearly not original - see the Reynolds sticker - it's had a repaint.

*feedback from a few friends who know the place.

Terrific echo in this place......................

They've got more stuff that isn't on the website, than is. Thats for sure. They seem to have almost literaly tons of it!

They may or may not have "real knowledge". But they're prices seem to be cheaper than any/many places out there. An they're extremely helpfull in my 1st hand experience.

"Joining the gravy train" or not, it can IMO only be a good thing to have another (very reasonably priced) resource out there. I wish them good luck!

Hello all,

Not too sure I understand the above post as I can't see where I've said this is as it came out of the factory?

My name is Jake and I work at the bike cave adding things to the website. As we go through our tens of thousands of items there are bound to be a few mistakes - I'm no bike buff but the 'cave' as you refer to it is owned by a chap who does have a great deal of knowledge.
Unfortunately, everything I add to the site can't be proof read by him so I'm sorry if there is a mistake.

Please feel free next time you spot something to contact me directly on 020 8341 6307 rather than creating a post on a forum that puts our business in a bad light.

Best,

Jake

That post was going so well up until that bit, another retailer struck off my list of places to shop from...places that are scared of being discussed make me wary.

I'm quite happy to be discussed but there was no discussion in the post I was referring to.

All I'm saying is that posting your friends opinions when you have no first hand experience is putting people off coming to the shop a lot more than one wrongly described frame which is very unfair.

We have many happy customers every day, come along and see for yourself.

Caveat Emptor.

Having just seen this, and as this is a forum for enthusiasts (rather than a commercial site for promoting businesses) we are all entitled to our opinions; and most of those opinions (like many opinions) are formed either from first hand experience or the experience of other like minded enthusiasts (i.e our friends).

One thing we do like to discuss here is the provenance (i.e the history of bikes, frames and other components).

I am sure it is not our intention to promote your business in either a positive or negative way.

And as one of my Retrobike bros has said, the fact you don't like being discussed has put him off.

Caveman says he's no bike buff (?!), so why call him for more information - if I were a retailer I would be providing the"more"information without having to request it - anyone remember Arfur Daly?

Roadking.
