Stolen 1996 saracen may be on its way back!

Glad you got it back.

I had both my GT's taken a number of years ago. I got a phone call at work from the Police, asking me if I owned two GT bicycles, I replied that by the sounds of it I used to own two nice GT bicycles.

Thanks to an observant neighbour, the two little scrotes that broke into my garage were apprehended before they got to the end of the road.

Turned out to be the older brother of my sons best mate, who's father owned a chain of local newagents. To say that dad was  was a major understatement. He collected the bikes from the local nick and returned them complete with face to face apology from his eldest idiot...erm son, and a big box of choccies (that eldest son WAS going to pay for).

There after, as well as the padlock on the garage door, all bikes are secured together and to the garage wall.

that was lucky, you have to wonder why sometimes?,
i went to York today and there were loads of really nice bikes just locked to everything, after this i wouldn't let mine out of sight. less alone leave it on a street
funny thing really as i have two shiny new cubes (road and mountain)but i was more bothered about this one.....! mind the others are insured. :D

Just catching up on some old threads, and although your bike been (to use the car world term 'barried') at least you have gotten it back, i know of a few bikes locally that have only ever been seen in fleeting glances, i happened to see my mates '97 zaskar a few years back, (like literally a year or so ago, and it was stolen in '98 ) stolen before even being completely built up as a brand new frameset, how i knew it was his i dont know, but you just 'know' dont you, and when i spent too long giving it second glances (was in my car in traffic doing the double take thing) the guy turned round and scarpered the other way on the path bowling over some kid in the process!

But it leaves me wondering (when you talk of garage/shed defences) why the hell do people keep bikes in the garage/shed, id never dream of it, im still at home with the rents but my bikes have ALWAYS lived in the house, its the best atmosphere for them and the most secure location, currently in our hallway are my old '96 giant atx850 (now owned by my dad) my mums 'thing' my '98 kona caldera, then on the landing outside my room there is my 2008 carrera vulcan, and in my room is my '93 lava dome, and all my spares, '96 RS judy xc's my spare bars for the '94 lava dome frameset (which is on the landing behind my carrera) basically everything bike related lives in the house, this has always been so and i couldnt ever imagine wanting to leave a bike (any bike i cared about, regardless of cost/value) in a shed or garage, forgive me if i sound condescending, this isnt my intent, im just curious as to why people would love their bikes so much, yet not want them in the house/at close quarters for longevity of life, and safekeeping?

Not everyone lives with steptoe and son

I think in an ideal world your situation is perfect, but it isn't practical for everyone sadly, personally my wife doesn't want bits of bikes or full bikes for that matter lying around the house, especially for an inquisitive 2 year old to start playing with (he's already covered various walls in grease after playing with my pace rc35s and a tube of lube).

I was called out the other night, my sister-in-laws boyfriend's bike lock broke while his bike was locked in Manchester city centre. I went down there with a rucksack full of tools and despite it not being a cheap lock, my favourite hacksaw cut through it in less than 15 seconds.
No-one asked us what we were doing either.

Because some of us have wives and kids and expensive carpet and wives, and sofas that could get snagged and wives and paintwork and wives.

My son's Boardman road bike lives in his room. Everything else lives in my garage, all locked together in one big happy family.

BTW: Did I mention that some of us have wives?

Somehow I've snuck a few bikes into our one-bed flat without upsetting the better half toooo much, although when we're into double figures she starts to get a little agitated, what with her studio being squeezed in here as well...

My '93 Saracen Tuff Trax Elite never turned up, neither did the '92 Traverse Elite I lost seven years ago.

I have been watching fleabay and Gumtree for months nothing, nada

But one day maybe.

Ere' that's a thought, what happens if someone here buys a bike on fleabay and discoverers it is stolen property ?
