So its needle in a haystack time. 1" steerer, open faced 25.4 clamp, steerer long enough to get the bars at least level with the seat ( remembering my height), short reach to make up for the huge reach on the frame and looks ok.....

Will this do the job? Not open faced, but it is very tall and short

Im going to pop into micks shop tomorrow and see if he has anything that might fit the bill. He often has weird and wonderful stuff from yesteryear laying about!

Ive also measured the stack and reach of the frame with the help of a laser level....strange how these figures never made the specs bitd. Now, its all anybody seems interested in.

Well....its pretty short for a XL bike, with a long reach for drops.

Working from a fairlight faran (which i sat on a mates the other day) which has a 650 stack and 410 reach, im going to need a pretty short stem....may be 50mm tops. Im also going to need the stem to be minimum 150mm above the current headset, just to be level with the saddle...let alone higher! Blast my lanky parents!

What are your plans for levers/shifters

Ive got a set of 8 speed low rent drop bar sti (the temptation to write std is alwsys there ), which will work. Im going to have to address the front derailleur pull issue if i go down that route, but i made an adapter years ago for a friend that moved the clap down 6mm to replicate the difference....could do that again. The other option is 1x, but with a close ratio.....hoping i can get enough top/ bottom for my ramblings.

In the meantime I've fished out some cantilevers, rear mech, tyres and blocks from the stash.

Sadly the bars won't go through a closed face stem. Seems to be an issue with compact flared bars....but then they were never designed to need to!

Sadly the bars won't go through a closed face stem. Seems to be an issue with compact flared bars....but then they were never designed to need to!

You could always opt for an open faced 1 1/8 threadless stem with a quill adapter, it will give you many more options.
