star nut fitting - a poll!

Star nut in rigid carbon fork with alloy steerer... should I:

  • fit myself?

I use a 1/4" drive socket that's just a bit smaller than the internal diameter of the steerer. Use the allen bolt to fix it square in the middle, then bash.

So I'm neutral. :P `
 
Star nuts are a poor solution. Anything which works by digging in and deforming the tube should be avoided. Head doctors are a much neater idea and work well.
