Speedy up a PC

Adding ram is pretty easy, youve just got to get the right sort - i used kingston's website to get memory for my old laptop - you type in your computer name and model and they tell you what you need and where to get it - easy!

It's easy enough to fit as well - open the back up and its fairly self explanatory - read what it says on the chips (they're normally the long rectangular) and you'll find the memory quick enough

It is a very old laptop, as ross says, you'll see an improvement with a ram upgrade, but it'll never fly.

You definitely need to leave Windows 2000. Support for it ends in July, after which it isn't going to be suitable for internet use.

I would even say, fabulous as it is, Ubuntu is not ideal for such an old computer.

I suggest Puppy Linux:

It will run better than it did when it was new. More memory can't hurt, but with this you probably won't need it.

You are right about Ubuntu. I did go back on my first comment not realising how old the laptop is! Puppy is good, and Slax is another good one.

Xubuntu is brilliant and will happily whizz along with those specs , it's fairly intuitive to use too , there are plently of free programs to replace stuff like office , media player photoshop etc . mine boots in 16 seconds not counting the bios and login ( linux is very multi user friendly ) as things like the graphical user interface ( what handles everything you see so it's not just a black screen with command prompts ) are trimmed right back to make it fast on lower speced hardware . I've trimmed everything unnecessary away and the whole OS and all programs takes up 2gb .

Crucial memory will tell you what particular type of memory it needs and will even tell you the max amount it'll take too .

If your lucky an enthusiasts forum for that laptop will have found it takes more memory than the manufacturers claimed and crucial will have that listed .

+1 for Linux Puppy on an under powered lap top - you'll be amazed how much quicker it is. I tried it after Chris recommended it once, just brilliant!

+1 for running the Crucial memory check - used it a few times and it will reccommend a reasonable buy - often will delivery quickly.

Can use it to get the spec needed and buy off eBay a bit cheaper but Crucial certainly used to do a memory g'tee etc.

A cut down Linux will also make it go quicker, just maybe not quick ;-)

I had to look at a laptop recently, chap told me it needed "cleaning out" as it was running very slow. Spent a little while getting rid of old programs, stopping programs running on startup, defragging etc. In reality I should have looked at the RAM first

It had 248MB. I just stuck in another 512MB as a quick/cheap option.

Absolutely flew in comparison!
