PC problem, I'm at a loss

Unless you need MS for specific apps, switch to Linux. No malware, spyware virus issues, boots in seconds.
You can try it by sticking it on a disc, and booting from disc, before you decide to take the plunge. Took me a few minutes to decide, never looked back.
I use Ubuntu, have a look at their website.

Has it suddenly gone poo or has it been slowing down over a period of time? Could be a RAM issue perhaps? Whats the spec of your comp?

Get Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy, RegCure (may be shareware), and run them. Run RegCure several times. Get rid of Zone Alarm and run the free version of Avast.

0.92 download and 0.23 upload from here - is that ridiculously slow?

ridiculous is an understatement

Thats really poor, not much above dial up
Id get on to the buggers right away.A bit of shouting 'What the f** am i paying for" might help.
First i recommend the nicely nicely approach, but be reasonably upset, paying them X amount for little better than dial up.

I sit on an average of 7mbs download with just over 1mbs on upload

Personally i dont think this has a jot to do with malware or spyware or any such thing.
check your filter is set up and nobodys stood on it or pluggged it in the wrong bit.
Also speak to a telecom engineer, there is a diode in the junction box that can seriously interfere with your line speed.I had a slow line, but my mate who works for BT took it out and its been fine since.
I cant say if this is your problem or not.
Was everything fine then all of a sudden you get this loss of performance ? :?

as further above - get a live cd of linux (stick it in and boot up off CD) - try Knoppix for example, and see if you get normal internet speeds using that, and if that'sOK then you know it's a problem with Windows rather than your PC. Let me know if you need a CD - I'll send you one.

Not a bad idea, but wouldn't rule out a filesystem / disk problem, if you've booted and running from a live linux cd.

how about connecting all the computrs and speed testing .then disconnect a pc then test again.do this untill all are disconnected and compare results...one of your machines other than the main pc may be hogging the bandwidth.

Well, it was definitely something in the PC's usage of the network connection. The CPU wasn't doing anything, nothing else was using the router bandwidth to the internet. Reloading XP sorted it.

I cannot be bothered with Linux, I have an Eee and trying to upgrade it to flash 10 was a major pain in the backside. I want to be unaware of the technology. I'm not interested and don't want to be interested in anything that needs you to prat about with the command line. My TV maker doesn't ask me to get out a soldering iron for a digital software upgrade FFS.

I hate PCs. I can think of no other product I own that requires so much effort and maintenance to keep going.

I'm glad I got that off my chest. Now I won't be grumpy when the kids come home from school.

Thanks chaps for your ideas, much appreciated.
