Speedy up a PC

Hi guys , need some help on a PC issue again.. I have a spare PC laptop, a Toshiba S1800-254 , and its really really slow.. I have done a defrag, and its helped a little,, but not a lot.. its running windows 2000 professional and when I access the net on it I use firefox mozilla..

There is no major software programs loaded onto it so I assume its just a bit outdated..

How do I make it quicker on the net.. ;)

TIA

Yea I thought maybe RAM would help , How do I find out how much RAM it has fella.. ?

This Ubuntu is it any good, any issues etc.. ?

Ok guys this is what it has.. :

its a intel celeron processor 1.00GHz , 248MB of ram

I take it this is not good

So next question,, can you retrofit RAM into a laptop, could I do this or is it a shop jobby.. ?

Ubuntu is great, i'm running it on my main pc and some other RB members are also running it.
I think your laptop may not run it though. Although it doesn't need much processor power it does need more ram.
ram is fairly easy to fit.

yours takes 144-Pin PC133 SODIMM or 144-Pin PC100

really old. should find a stick on ebay. worth checking if you have 2x128mb at the mo or just 1x256. usually 2 slots.

Cheers fella, I thought it might be a RAM issue,, is it easy then to install .. ?

Is it just a case of undoing the back or something.. ?

And the RAM I take I could buy maybe off t bay.. ? and whats the largest amount I could put in..

Sorry for all the questions,, its just that I run two macs,,and not really PC literate..

Really appreciate your help btw.. ;)
