Specialized hard rock drop out

I picked up a specialized hard rock today, the drop outs have a feature I’ve never seen. There is a second hole behind where the rear wheel with quick release stops. Is it possible to use through axles? I’ve never had a through axle bike so I don’t have a reference.

Re:

Thru axles are threaded at one end; the holes behind the dropouts on your Hardrock are not, so you cannot use a thru axle on it. I think the holes are too small too: thru axles have a wider diameter. I don't know why Specialized put those little holes behind the dropouts: they're a bit weird but do no harm.

Sort of reminds me of old BMX axles that had a washer with tab that fit in a rearward hole that went under nut. Those BMX holes were much smaller

Re:

Yep - smaller clamp area. I have one too. A quick release does stay in though. I tried a bolt on wheel as well but that wouldn't stay put: it kept working it's way loose under load. The paint looks in very good nick on yours BTW. They're not flash bikes but they offer a comfy, relaxed riding position; well worth a few weight saving upgrades.

The guy who sold it to me used it one summer than stuck it in a shed. It’s in nice shape, besides a few rusty spokes

Re:

How small is the frame, I have, well my kids had a spesh hotrock (dodgy name for a kids bike imho, gateway drug and all that:)) and it came with stabilizers that were kept stable (pardon the pun) by a simple that fitted into a hole like that.

Whilst this may not be the case here, perhaps it is a fitting for a kick stand or even the Gibbons for a pedal back brake (which the hotrock also has)?
