Specialized - Direct Drive bottom bracket

Anyone know anything about me, other than my favourite pair of glove BiTD (some 3/4 finger grey ones) I know nothing about their stuff.

I now have a direct drive bottom bracket, though looking in the 93 and 94 catalogue it is not like them, they are the usual cups with locking both side of as per bikepro

Mine had the name written in big letters (ID easy ) and the cups are externally wide Alu with two flat on them. The axle seem to have a large diameter 'cover' in the cup. Flat faced.
Hard to tell more as it's on the bike and the cranks are still on.

So year ?
Material (presumed Ti as that was mentioned in the sales)
Any good ?
etc..

They are smoother and spin for ever as though there is nothing stopping them, even better than my M900 which spin for ages.

You can see the cup in this picture (ignore the circles), they have littel holes in them

Might be bikepro does mentioned them, just looked in and earlier catalogue and though still in german there is one that looks a bit similar but not the same.

The first Titanium spindled model came late in 1991 and was called the "Direct Drive Bottom Bracket". Instead of sourcing it from the orient, Specialized got in touch with Doug White of White Industries in Novato, California. White Industries is known for having made the finely engineered "Phantom" bottom bracket. An arrangement was made between White and Specialized for similar boxes to the Phantom's manufactured with Specialized's scripting on them, and the Phantom B/B was modified so that the aluminum parts were Black anodized and a Specialized logo was engraved in the outer face of the cups. No functional, mechanical, or engineering differences were noticeable between the White Phantom and the Specialized Direct Drive.

So the White stuff any good?

I have a Phantom 1991 BB. The cups just spin on and tighten with a 36mm wrench. The spindle floats so you can tap it to center it. Then tighten the 2mm set screws in the cups (flat area). On the bottom photo, see the hole on top of the flat part of the cup? There's a set screw inside. The cup with the lettering goes on the left. Other than that, it's a very simple BB.

I agree that is spins forever and smooth. I've never found a smoother bottom bracket.

I just took mine off today.
