Son is bringing his girlfriend over for dinner

I think you're worrying to much. Remember you're on your turf, in your house, eating at your table, with your son. You're also older than she is, with far more world experience.

As such, in the rightful order of the universe, she should be feeling the need to impress far more than you. Cook a meal you know you can do well, with the minimum of fuss, stress or anxiety, that way you know the result will be as expected, and it gives you an air of calm unflustered competence. A competent cook always makes it look easy and engenders a relaxed cordial atmosphere. Plus, it'll leave you more time, energy and scope for witty conversation and showing her all those embarrassing baby photos, whilst pondering whether this particular one might be the one to bear you grandchildren, or just another unsociable git looking for a way out...

this although I'd avoid the photos, all you can do is be yourself and trust she has the ability to recognise good people when she meets them, relaxed people make others relaxed and everyone has a good time, so stop worrying !

I hope she'll be supplying some tasty biscuits, she's warking in the labs at Foxes biscuits as part of her degree :D

What I want to know how you know about the text :D

Was she caught in the act ?

WD :D

Yes, by my son, and James being James thought it hilarious, made me somewhat embarrassed, but my son does not get embarrassed about anything and was quite happy to relate it to me.

I bet her face was a picture !

WD :D

A lot of my son's friends come from houses that are like show homes, minimalistic, spotlessly clean, spotless beige carpets everything matching and nothing out of place, ours is lived in, if there are any ornaments it's usually dérailleurs and cassettes and chainsets :D It's cluttered with books and children things and bikes and bike frames, it's tidy but hotch potch and these obsessive compulsively tidy and everything matching people find it just too much, but to me it's home and so it is to my children :D

Although secretly I've always admired a person who can work all hours then have these spotless homes, when I struggle to do it and am a full time housewife

Reading this on iPhone and the text is small. Sorry I thougt there was an "n" in you "warking" typo. Took me a while to work out what she was doing at fox's biscuits.
