So does one cook what one ordinarily cooks? Ragu Bolognese, steak and ale pie, stew and dumplings, or does one try to impress her with ones exceptional culinary skills, yeah as if I had any

I mean the last time my son brought a girl back she texted her mate saying "get me outta here is's awful" She wasn't here long enough to find out what my food tasted like

I'm not a complete novice to be honest, every meal is cooked from scratch but it has to be from a recipe, I cannot invent adapt a little but never create.

It has to be home cooked, need to maintain that domestic goddess persona you know :D

Cook whatever is your sons favourite meal, if she likes it then he may well have cracked it  :D

That would have been the perfect plan but two weeks ago he called from Morrisons to talk through his fav meal so he could cook it for her and her family and yes they loved it, but that means it has to be something different.

I think you're worrying to much. Remember you're on your turf, in your house, eating at your table, with your son. You're also older than she is, with far more world experience.

As such, in the rightful order of the universe, she should be feeling the need to impress far more than you. Cook a meal you know you can do well, with the minimum of fuss, stress or anxiety, that way you know the result will be as expected, and it gives you an air of calm unflustered competence. A competent cook always makes it look easy and engenders a relaxed cordial atmosphere. Plus, it'll leave you more time, energy and scope for witty conversation and showing her all those embarrassing baby photos, whilst pondering whether this particular one might be the one to bear you grandchildren, or just another unsociable git looking for a way out...

Wow! Lets hope he kicked that one to the curb fast!

As long as she is feels welcome it wont matter what you eat, but it might be worth checking she is not a veggie :)

Why don't you invite her to help you cook the meal??

At the very worst you can both get pissed on cooking wine??

Treat it like a simple dinner party do something you can prepare easily well in advance and just stick it in the oven on the day  :D
