So... what's your choice of grease for bearing packing, then

rock and roll super web grease for bearings is ace stuff. its uber thick and sticky and stays where you put it. although i have used Vaseline in a emergency

black cv joint grease, never failed :D
Just because it was the closest to hand, I packed a headset with this stuff last night. Think I'll stick with it, if it's good for CV joints for 100k then it must be good enough for any bearing on a bike.
Is that a generic name for it - and is it available at motor factors, and, say, places like, um, Halfords?

Think I can get away with saying Halfords just once, but saying Halfords 3 times in one post is likely to invoke Candyman... bzzt <NO CARRIER>

It is just literally CV grease, if you asked for that at any motor factors they'd know what you were after.

Halfords, Halfords, http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165705

<Just A Minute>

Repetition of Halfords, surely?

I'm sure you could just as easily argue it was deviation, too. And quite possibly the "um" damns me for hesitation.

Damn, 3 for 3, I lose my bet.

For headsets and the bearings in rear suspension setups, any grease will do.
However for wheels, pedals and anything else that can spin at high speeds, you need something that can handle higher temperatures.

Personally I use Shimano's bearing grease for everything.
It's around £5 for a 60ml tub. I've been using mine for quite a while now, and I'm very satisfied with it.

used to use the old type finishline lithium grease the clear vasaline looking one before they changed it too the crap they produce now

I use the crap they produce now. It's light and coats all surfaces well. Possibly too light. I can understand people wanting a heavier grease.

I wouldn't suggest white lithium grease. It is great for lubricating sliding surfaces but as a bearing grease I would think it wouldn't be ideal. Short term it would work fine I imagine. Longer term I don't think it would be up to snuff.

I avoid white grease for some reason.

I just think if halfords can give it away for free with the bearings they sell, its not going to be that good.

I have always found it a bit stiff also.

molyslip in hubs and pedals.. LM grease on a post/stem and rock n roll super slick in headsets...
