Visitors watching Eastenders and I see a character is smoking. This normalises smoking for kids, and I don't see the justification for it in a soap.

Roll on the day when smoking is left where it belongs, which for me is somewhere on a hillside watching the sunset. Just now and then, and definitely no kids in attendance!

?

....what about the rapes,murders,etc......?and the general oppressive misery kids are watching? not to mention the god-awful 'acting'.......

Sorry smoker here.....
All i,ll say is what a load of b@@@@ks

We all have our opinions on everything... And lets keep it that way...
No girly comments on if its right or not..!!!!
Bet i could find something about everything...
But you know what I CAN'T BE BOTHERED.!!!!

Thats why we are in the shit we are... To much pc.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for looking :D

Not really anything to do with being politically correct.

Even the most outrageous non politically correct people know there is a time and place, a context, for everything.

Vapid soap operas are not the place, in my view, for a pro smoking stand.

Hmm, I saw the thread title and thought this was something to do with Smokey and the Bandit on TV on Sunday afternoon  (people smoking on that too)

What gets me is, since the smoking ban it's been illegal to smoke in public places and in the work place, actors on the likes of Eastenders are AT WORK how come they're allowed to smoke?

I get its a programme..
But how can you make it realistic if you dont have these things going on...
I mean when have you been in the east end and not seen market traders or people standing there smoking...

We need to add muggers and dealers standing there.... Then it will be like the real thing

So lets all agree to add to it...
Not take away... :D

I don't consider Eastenders suitable viewing for impressionable young children, hence my 'impressionable young child' doesn't watch it.

I'm not a smoker and I think that anyone who does smoke, fully knowing the damage it causes, is a moron. I don't expect 'the world' to conform to my beliefs though, in order to make my job as a parent easier and somehow absolve me of my responsibilities in educating my child.

Rather than banning smoking/sex/violence etc, I'd rather see it's inclusion in TV programmes used as an excuse to enter a dialogue with our kids to educate them as to the dangers, or not, as the case may be!

Possibly the onus should lie with parents to be more responsible in what they allow their kids to watch rather than expecting TV programme producers to censor their 'art'?

What a load of utter tripe. Firstly it's not 'pro' smoking to have one or two characters out of probably 40 to have the occasional fag. What about drinking? Adultery? Dangerous driving? Drugs? Theft? I'm no soap expert but AFAIK these are all fairly common themes, not to mention many more risque topics.

It's the role of parents to educate children in these areas, not television programmes, channels or the state. The sooner people start taking some personal responsibility rather than perpetually blaming someone else for their own failures the better. I'll not hold my breath though.
