SM800 Beast of the East Cannondale Mountain Bike 1991 Sage

Retro Newbie
So I bought this thing for 50 bucks off a Craigslist sale in beautiful Grand Junction Colorado. I know that I'm going to catch bloody hell from some of you cats for what I've done to her, but I went ahead and did what I've done because it was my intention all along to offer some degree of 2011-level comfort on a 1991-era Cannondale.

I always wanted a Cannondale hardtale, and I could not resist the $50 sale. The tires were so old that they had dry rotted.

The first thing that I bought was a set of wheels from Neuvation. They were cheap--less than $100 shipped.

The GripShift I bought for $13. Put a low geared 9 speed cassette, and then got rid of the DX Triple crank, which I exchanged for a FSA SL-K double crank.

The cockpit is black, generic aluminum, and the fork is a 1" RST Omega. At 100mm travel, it sets me back quite a bit, but on the 18 Road trails of Fruita Colorado, it works pretty well riding.

Don't be too mean to me, guys. I've done what I've done because of my desire for a bike I always wanted combined with wanting to ride it for so long on proper trails.

That said, nostalgia is nonsense and it is now on eBay. Time for a new project!

Looks pretty mild compared to some of the vandalism I've seen! I don't remember seeing such a nice colour on a Cannondale before.

Personally I hate Gripshift but they're light enough and look clean - if they work for you, who cares what I think?

Edit to say - I think your rear brake cable outer could do with a trim...

Might as well trim the front as well. :)

Cool looking Dale

I have the same bike but in black with orange splatter. I remember when I picked up my original from the Evans in Croydon they had a jade green Dale just like your's... I remember thinking what a beautiful colour.

Your mods seemed totally inoffensive. Shame you sold it :(
