Sloppy shifting....

Hi guys

I have been going out on my Marin over the last week and the shifting at the rear is a bit shit...I have tried and failed to tweak the rear mech. I can get it to shift ok in the bottom 3 or the top 4 but not both! Its a Shimano M735 XT one. I have noticed that there was some movement in the mech, where it joins the frame (not the frame threads but the top part of the mech). Does that mean the mech is shot? I bought it to replace a working but tatty one and since the shifting has been shit. (and I sold the tatty but working one! )

Any thoughts

Doug

Re:

I've been having the same trouble over the last week with my road bike. I have taken the pivot bolt out and put a load of fresh grease in and it seems a bit tighter but doubt it'll work for long if at all.
Probably need a new rear mech or replacement pivot bolt I think.

The movement could be due to a worn pivot bolt/bushes. Does the chain line up vertically with the sprockets?

It lines up ok but doesnt seem to move quite enough to shift...

Re:

Are the jockey wheels badly worn?

I had an XT rear mech with very worn jockey wheels and I couldn't get the gears to index across the whole cassette, I could get the top or bottom 3 or 4 out of the 7, but not all.

I replaced the worn original jockey wheels with a set of these: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/bbb-bdp-rollerb ... ey-wheels/ and it sorted the problem.

Hi the jockey wheels are fine infact the whole mech is in good condition...

Cables/housings - either lubrication or replacement would be the obvious place I'd look.

I replaced the cable inners and some outers last summer with new and its had limited use since then...

...thinking more and more that it is the mech. I don't have another to change to see if thats it but I am thinking of getting a replacement. Does anyone else's mech move if grabbed and moved sideways?

Re:

My gear shifting had been like stirring a bag of spanners for a while. During a routine strip, clean and grease of the bike, I discovered why – the freehub had shattered into four pieces, bearings rolling everywhere. The cassette had been the only thing holding it all together

Strip, clean, replace/renew any suspect parts (if necessary), lubricate and rebuild. A process of elimination will sort things out. It's like turning it on and off again :)
