That needs a threaded axle extending beyond the drop outs as you know.
The hub in the picture looks to be an Aluminium axle and will probably be propriety to the style of hub. (like a Hope hub).

Well keep us posted on any happening, all I can go on is the pictures

New rear end or find a way to stop it waggling and twisting as much.

I think one you start damage where it's clamping is though it'll try and seat itself into a bad position.

Indeed, but as Fluffy points out, replacing the endcap of an OEM or off-brand hub from a decade-old bike probably means replacing the entire hub. At that point, replacing the wheel is often more economical once labour costs are factored in.

Worth pointing out, certainly, but also worth trying a better skewer first.

I got an steel skewer and it seems to be doing the trick. Hopefully soon I'll be able to hit the trails and see if it stays put. Thanks for all the advice

What's the inside of the dropout like? I imagine that's got to be at least a bit responsible.

Hope so, like i said, i tried all sorts with mine.

Including changing the locknuts.

10mm solid axle, job done, done hundreds of miles since....

But my wheels are cup/cone, so its an easy job!

Success! 10 miles of rough trails and even a few spills and the axel is staying put!! I'm pretty stoked! A used steel skewer and QR did the trick. I just didn't think it'd hold any better since I had the aluminum skewer sooooo darn tight already.
