You can get both. Look towards late 90's Slingshots. My first Slingshot was a 98 with matching straight blade fork. It was a folder, True Temper steel frame.
I've had a few in the stable. Can't say I've ridden them though. They've appeared to be quite beefy and if the fiberboard is in great shape, you'll be a-ok!
The Slingshot rigid fork is real nice. The whole bike is growing on me after about 4-5 rides to figure out what's it about. 80% of the time its a steel rigid bike.. but on choppy flat stuff the "middle suspension" smooths stuff out. Not saying rock gardens become bike paths.. but there's a definite suppleness when the frame starts giving. It took me a few rides to figure out how to feel the benefits. Riding one easy won't make a bit of difference.
