Sleeve in FAT forks?

Roughly how long's the steerer? Can you see any evidence of a join for an extension from the outside, or the bottom end of any sleeve?

If the steerer's shortish, it's more likely that it's an over-long internal butt on the steerer. On short forks the lower thick end of the steerer should really be cut down a bit before the fork's made to keep the internal bore long enough for the quill.

For example, on Columbus steerers the 2.6mm walled butt runs 95mm (20.2mm ID, 60mm straight + 35mm taper) up from the bottom of the steerer. The top section has thinner 1.6mm walls to give the 22.2mm internal diameter. So, if your steerer is under 178mm from underside of the crown to top (95mm butt + 83mm @22.2mm diameter), this could be the problem.

If it is just the butt in the steerer, it could be reamed out a bit deeper to allow you to use that stem. Looks like you need about 20mm. I've got the tools, might be able to help...

All the best,

Well I could trim the quill...not sure if I want to though. If I did and wanted to raise the height at some point I'd have removed a fair portion of adjustment. My wanting the stem dropped is mostly an aesthetics excercise, looking at the headtube a bit of rise will probably be welcome. I do intend to ride this bike so it needs to fit.

The query was more to do with whether FAT unicrowns had a sleeve fitted as standard. or if anyone else had the same issue.

Not a great look but probably comfier

Not standard on Fat forks, but I have seen this on other 80's forks, as well. Not sure what purpose it served, but it's annoying.

Danson's post seems the most likely. I'll investigate further tonight. :)
