Singlespeed advice please

Many thanks for all the time you have taken and the trouble you have gone to in order to help me - I really do appreciate it.

Just to conclude this Magura HS33 on U brake studs business -

Well, I bought myself a set (2nd hand) and attempted to fit them on my Explosif. Front set fitted fine (apart from a huge amount of faffing)and worked great, but the rear set were less successful.
Unfortunately the studs on the Explosif are too far apart (90mm centres)to allow getting the brake pads close enough to the rim. This is only a problem of course because of having to mount the adaptors upside down - normally there would be plenty of clearance to allow moving the cylinder assembly further inboard. I might have just got away with it with brand new pads and the travel adjuster wound right in, but I don't know....

So I guess I'll be putting them up for sale again - it was a good idea and you live and learn I suppose :(

I will, if I can get enthused enough to take the U brake off again and re-fit the Maguras. After a frustrating afternoon I put it all back the way it was !!

If you look at your photo of your set-up you can see the problem - because the adaptor is fitted upside down it fouls the brake cylinder where the hose connections are. I can't even get a little closer to the rim by setting the whole brake assembly at a slight inward angle, as this then brings the brake pad up against the tyre sidewall. I have the adaptors as far down as the slots will allow them to go.

Also, the stud for the quick release is too short to use with my U brake studs (they're shorter than canti studs) although I could live without that or make a longer one.

Do you happen to know what the overall thickness of a new Magura brake pad is? - I don't have one to check this, only half worn ones.

Hmm i see what you mean, If you get round to having another try can you photo it as there may be a work a round but its hard to say without seeing them on the bike.

I'm using the proper magura bolt but i haven't screwed it tight upto the boss as it doesn't need to be, Once it is fitted loosely and the quick release is tightened i just nipped up the bolt. When the quick release is undone the bolt can be undone by hand easily, it only really works properly when the quick release is tightened.

I think i have some spare pads in the garage i'll check tomorrow and let you know.

Thanks once again for your input on this Simon.
If I can grab a spare half hour sometime today I'll offer the rear brake up again and take a few photos. It only took me so long yesterday because I did the front brake first, so when I got round to the back I was already fed up with the amount of faffing around you seem to have to do to get them set up half reasonably.

The frustrating thing is that although I'm a toolmaker by trade I'm no longer working in the engineering industry. Otherwise I would have just machined up a couple of custom adaptors - it would have been a nice little project.

Cheers,

Andy.

As promised Simon - a few photos of the Magura set-up on my Explosif.

If you compare my photos to yours, you'll notice that although yours works (and mine doesn't) its the little details that make or break it.

For a start the centre to centre dimension on my U brake studs is 90mm, equating to 99mm O/A (versus 94mm for yours). Also I think that my studs are positioned a few millimetres higher than yours.

Anyway, all this means that I can't get the pads any closer to the rim than 6mm - I am unable to angle the whole assembly in slightly to take up this clearance as that would put the brake pad into the sidewall of the tyre and the cylinders are hard up against the mounting adaptor.

There's not really anywhere that metal could safely be removed to give more adjustment, not even at the top of the mounting slot - besides, the whole adaptor is only die-cast from "monkey metal" so I don't think it would stand much modification.

So, unless I'm missing an obvious solution (like an 8mm wider rim...) it looks like I'm out of luck. :(
I look forward to your thoughts on it anyway.

Andy.
