of course I'm stuck with the U-brake

You can use a Magura hydraulic rim brake in place of a U brake just mount the brackets upside down and it will work fine 8)

Well, I never knew that ! Just goes to show that you learn something new every day.....

Just to clarify this please - so if I bought a Magura HS33 brake set this would be totally compatible with U brake studs?

I need to make sure before I actually buy anything, obviously.....

Very many thanks,

Andy

All i had to do on mine was file about 1mm out of the magura mounting bracket so it would fit over the canti boss then it fitted just fine, I think tintin40 did the same for his Trimble also.

If you need anymore pictures i can whip one of the brackets off to show you, Just let me know.

Hi,

If it's not putting you to a lot of trouble I would really appreciate a pic. of the mod to the bracket, as without having one to "offer up" it's difficult for me to visualise - problem is I can't get my hands on a set of HS 33's without buying them first....

Also, did the centre to centre distance of the U brake studs pose any problem? On my Explosif they are approx 90mm centres, which is a bit more then typical canti/linear pull mountings.

Sorry for all the questions

I'll get you some pics done shortly, I'm not long out of bed and i'm a bit dopey when 1st awake so i'd probably end with pictures of the wrong bike or something

be about an hour

Right i'm awake now sort of so here goes

1st pic, Bit clearer picture of the canti as you can see it fits flush and follows the line of the seatstay.

2nd Pic, is with the canti bolt and wheel removed, not much to see but you can just see where the mount has been filed out. I measured the canti boss on the frame and it was 9mm and the magura canti mount is 8mm, So it is basicly a case of file a bit out, try it, file some out, try it, until you get a nice snug fit

DSC00086.jpg

3rd Pic, is the measurement between the outside diameters of the canti bosses which came to 94mm

4th Pic, brakes mounted with calipers upside down

DSC00088.jpg

5th Pic, Is the measurement between the top inside edges of the magura mounts, 65mm

Last pic, Is with the brakes mounted and wheel fitted, Now on mine its a very tight fit, because i use the widest tyre i could fit in the frame which was a 2.3 Kenda Kinetic. If you use a thinner tyre you would have more clearance

Its one of them jobs that's a bit of a bodge job until its all fitted up then it comes together at the end and looks fine and works a lot better than a U brake. Just to add no mods were done at all to the frame so if needed a U brake could be re-fitted at some point without any problems.

If i've missed anything or you need some more info just give me a shout.

Oh and i'm not a lover of cleaning bikes as you can see.

Very many thanks for sending the pics - I should have realised, of course ,that the mounts would need altering to fit on the 9mm dia. U brake studs (compared to V brake dia of 8mm).

The only thing that isn't clear (well to me that is !) is what prevents the two "calipers" (for want of a better word) from rotating away from the rim as the brake is applied? Normally the arch assembly would do this but obviously with the brackets fitted upside-down this can't be used.

Or is it obvious and I'm just being extra thick ??

What i did was fit the calipers, Then the wheel, Get everything lined up and running, Then lastly the 2 bits ive arrowed push against the seatstay then tighten up as tight as i could. With them being sort of splined they tend to get a good grip and will hold tight so when the force of the brakes are applied they wont budge and the seatstays will stop the caliper from parting.
