silly Octalink Q..

Ok guys apologies upfront for the newbie nature of this question..

Im rebuilding a bike with full Ultegra 6500, but struggling to find a bottom bracket.
Can I fit any other Octalink bracket provided the axle is the right length for my frame? Or does the interface differ at all after the following years?

Im guessing the only trade off is a little added extra weight with the newer cheapish b/b's?

Can anyone recommend me a good readily available Octalink b/b?

(its for a 97 Kona Kapu)

The only thing to look out for (as it is with MTB as well) is the use of Octalink v1 (XTR/DuraAce, possible Ultegra ?) or Octalink v2 (everything else)
The splines are different.
