Show us your (Marin) Boingers!

Hi all,

Long time lurker first time poster !

Got this at the weekend. Its a 98 Alpine Trail with everything completely original. I can't believe how well it rides and it makes a nice addition to my other two retro Kona's. Looking to update a couple of bits and peices as the v brakes are a bit shot, but everything else works top notch.

Re:

Some lovely bikes on here.

Here is my Marin Trigger's Broom, which is not strictly retro as over it's 17 years it has had many an upgrade. Everything on it has now been changed at least once, the only original part being the front triangle!

I bought it new as a 1999 Alpine trail with the thin tubular swingarm, which was rapidly swapped out for the beefier box section one from the same year mount vision pro, at the same time I added the coilover from the same bike. the next upgrade was the Hope C2's which are still an awesome set of brakes. The addition of disc brakes meant a newer fork (2002 Manitou Magnum R) with disc mount was added at the same time. group set is a mix of XT and SLX, the most recent addition is a stubby husselfelt stem and carbon bar. Headset is a bit tired, so a new one with up to date sealed bearing is on the way.

I have ridden this bike for several thousand miles over the years and it still never fails to make me grin.

I love it so much that I couldn't resist buying a 2002 model on gumtree the other day. That is at work awaiting assessment just now. The intention is to strip for spares, but I also have an extensive parts selection in the shed, so it may well end up being my winter steed.

Really loved this thread, I was riding this 19” B-17 FRS up to a few years ago and would get stopped by people sometimes who would reminisce about the bike or that they had really wanted one back in the day.

Nearly everything is original or accessories of the period. The bike came with a mentally long stem (possibly a mistake by Marin – it looked of XC length) which I swapped for the shorter matching Planet X and the Azonics bar cos it matched the stanchions and the stock one was frankly made of drainpipe…
The crud catcher predates the bike, it came from my previous KHS Montana Pro and the Cog Hog (remember those…) is from that ‘any colour as long as it’s purple’ period of MTB.

A brake lever got bent in a house move, but I was able to still get an Avid replacement, though it’s not the shiny chrome of the original and the saddle was updated to an early Specialized split version for comfort.

Pedals not shown as I’m still using them :) – the original Shimano DX DH SPD platforms – I had the red and black boots as well til they finally disintegrated.
I’m considering selling this on to make some garage space, so if anyone thinks they might want to take it, PM me. I’m more interested that it goes to a good home where someone will love it, than in making money, so if I can cover shipping from France/ Switzerland (whichever is cheapest) and buy myself some wine then it could be yours…
