"law" requires that the gun should be capable of killing the prey in one shot , as in head/chest . so for rabbits it would need to be a .22
Incorrect.. for a decent shooter, .177 is superior.

I like .20 but 'best of both worlds' is widely debated.. (perhaps not quite as much as .177 vs .22 but still).. pointless purchase unless things have changed in the last few years, there's very little ammo available.

Actually, the .22 is a real firearm, not a pellet gun-we have no restrictions on firearms- as long as they aren't a fully automatic assault rifle and you are not a convicted felon, you can buy and own what you want. I also have a Sig .45 pistol.

Sooooo casual!

Saltyman, what is the wooden grip bit for on that massive hand gun?

Here is mine:

This sounds like the MS v Apple (pointless) debate

With any calibre you have to shoot the animal in the correct place to kill.

I've got 7 different types of .20 could have bought 8 more. That's plenty to choose from for me.

It's a competition type hand gun so the grip support the hand for better accuracy and fully adjustable so it fits like a glove.
Very nice. I did competition .22 rim fire pistol when i was 20. Very hard. Now gone.

Oh yes.. it's all about personal choice. The arguments for .177 are stronger thatn for .22 though.

.22 is more brute force and ignorance (and limited range) whereas .177 provide3s greater accuracy over further distance (but is massively affected by wind and that)..

Not only that but hft and target clubs shoot .177 so clubs are easier to find ;)

Sounds like it..
I've had my Weihrauch for about 4 years now.wWen I bought it I looked at .20 (having shot one at the club I went to, and loved it) but the 3 or 4 shops we spoke to advised against because it was harder to get ammo for.
Sounds like that might have changed.

That and, not only is it the nest of both worlds, it's also reputedly the worst (a debate I read but didn't get into because I don't know nearly enough about it).

How about giving a bow a go

im pretty sure bow hunting is illegal in uk, same with x-bows, certainly the hunting bolts arent around anymore.
i dunno what makes a good rifle, but i can tell you a rifle that isnt good, and that is the crossman magnum 2200.
i had one a while ago cos it was the cheapest full pressure rifled barrel you could get at the time. that should have been a clue really.
it used a pump mechanism to load the chamber which took like 10 pumps to get up for 1 shot. the thing was accurate enough without a silencer, but you had no follow up shot. i killed a bunch of rabbits for the pot when i was living on a farm, yum yum. wished i had a shotgun tho thats for sure.
i've been wondering if there was a legal unlicensed rifle that could take down one of those little roe dear, there are tons of them running around feral round where i live, escaped from farms. like you can get really close cos they dont have a clue. well not my style really, i prefer the bunnies to jump infront of the pellet :) they know they are going to a better place (rabbit madras)
Yep, bowhunting is completely illeagal but you can fish with one.

Need to be a bit careful where you buy air rifles from too..

The first one we bought (a .22) was tested for power at the club and it was nearly 16lb.. that's 5 years mandatory for having an FAC rifle without a licence.

Got our money back, went somewhere else and bought the Weihrauch. Which tests at bang on the money.

CO2 rifles are hopeless.. air temperature affects power and can put them over the legal limit.

Agree for a British legal rifle then .22 has a hard time. I find each calibre has it's uses. Up close for shooting rats in doors then 22 but for distance then the other cal's. Over British legal then bigger cal come to the top and the more modern ammo too.
hft and targets then 177 is top. I've had nightmare looking for a club.
Airguns are perfect for the vermin they are used any thing bigger and it's over kill.

Browsing through this thread makes me want to start shooting again.
I used to be pretty good as a kid, but really hadn't thought about it after my dad stopped shooting his pellet gun.

Unfortunately I can't legally own a firearm because of Belgian laws, but anything that uses air, gas or springs is not considered a firearm and therefore legal. No need for a permit and no limitation on power either.
Bows and crossbows are legal here too, you don't even need a permit for them.
Might have to look into which one to get, but I'm leaning more towards handguns than rifles.

I'd better get in touch with a club. I live in the city center, and don't think my neighbors will appreciate it when I start practicing in the garden.
