depends on the helmet, i've used long zip ties in the past looped through the slots in the helmet. Now i just mount the light to the bike.

those velcro ties that you hold bike wheels on to car racks with
my halfords had them for a couple of quid in the bargain bin
then fix as per 1duck's pic
fitting in the middle for me ,but you may prefer a side mount sir
 
And there was me thinking there was a professional item to secure one to yer lid

Looks like the cableties and velcro & stuff from the kitchen drawer will be taking a kicking tonight then :D :D

I find side mounting pulls the helmet to one side unless you balance them, you also need to wedge them so they face exactly the where you look otherwise you get eye strain as you are drawn to the off centre hotspot.
 
Or you could get one of these and do the job proper,

mt zefal do a small aerosol canister for punctures they come with a very similar clamp to that.
