Should there be a law against this? (Chain Reaction)

Of course we are all indebted to Chain Reaction for their fast and free delivery, but I really couldn't believe it when I saw this package.

I ordered two headset spacers from them, only because it was raining and I couldn't be bothered to go down to Rayments Cycles. Two headset spacers arrived in a 21cm by 33cm packet, accompanied by yet more of the disgusting energy gel samples that I don't want. The total weight of the packet was 260g. The weight of what I ordered (including its own packaging) was 25g, so the contents weighed less than a tenth of the whole. Why chop down trees just for the sake of wasting cardboard?

There should be a law against it IMO.

Will give you 10p for the energy gels. ;)

It does seem a little excessive but then again a jiffy bag is paper and more plastic and so on - I don't know what wins really. I suspect they have their fair share of returns from ham-fisted couriers and the post etc.

I have never bought nuffin from CRC.

There is.....
Producer Responsability under the Packaging Regs

Among other things, if you get through or generate more than 50tonnes of packaging a year (that is, fill more than 50tonnes of packaing with your products), you have certain obligations that you must fulfill

Based on a guess at the size of CRC operations, I would estimate that they do exceed this level. Whether they comply, is another matter, but if they are aware and do comply, then they have to demsonstrate HOW they are actively reducing their packaging levels

They pay X amount for packaging materials, so it makes no difference to them whether they send something in a small jiffy bag or a box like the one you've received.

It's much easier for them to bung your stuff into a bigger box than it is to try to get it into a small jiffy bag.

I've received a few like that from them. Most noticeably a set of self-extractor crank bolts (x2) which came in a box that size

On the plus side, the boxes make very good packaging material for cranks and disc brakes, as the outer edges (at least on the boxes I have) fold inwards and down on to whatever is inside, holding it in place nicely ;)

I'm not sure if Jiffy bags/padded envelopes can be recycled. Cardboard can. Nothing's ever simple :)

I was quite surprised as well at some of the box sizes in comparison with the contents when ordering from Chain Reaction

x2 I guess. Although it does seem a shame when you get something so small is such a large package. At least with jiffy bags they are easier to reuse.

If their 'wasteful' packaging bothers you that much, why not wait for the rain to stop and then go buy them from your LBS? You'd have got them quicker, supported the local economy and done your bit for the environment.
