One part of the western lifestyle they aren't following is the green agenda. .

How do you know.... do you live there? are you active in these societies enough to be able to comment?

I've seen and read enough to know that when addressing the needs of their people i.e. shelter, food, transport etc green issues aren't high on the list of priorities. Understandably.

So if the billions in China, India, Brazil, Indonesia etc don't care what difference is a few million in the UK going to achieve? Next to nothing, other than the self-satisfaction of 'doing their bit'.

We might as well give up and jump off the cliff now then, eh?

I didn't say that. I've made clear my opinion as you referred to on your next line.

I think ultimately we'll learn and adapt to live on man made resources. We're already seeing lab grown meat. Fast forward a couple of hundred years and the phrase 'finite resources' might be redundant altogether. Of course I won't be here to see it, likewise the planet isn't going to implode in my lifetime either so it's difficult for me to get over excited either way.

Just another way do-gooders can feel all superior imo. When buying or selling a product or service the key question is always "What's in it for me?" Millions are converted to community recycling and I can't think of one tangible reason other than smugness.

I just don't get it.

Try the fact that hundreds of millions of people greedily scoffing up finite natural resources then lobbing them in a hole in the ground, never to be used again.

I've already addressed that point. Use less. If all the efforts and money spent on recycling were instead directed at changing purchasing habits that would be more sustainable imo. Surely it makes more sense to treat the cause rather than the symptom?

If that really happened, en-masse, across many countries, economies would collapse.

Modern western economic policies depend on people being rabid consumers.

There's simply no escaping the fact that resources are finite, and for a barely perceptible amount of effort, considerably benefits can be realised.

Not to mention the rise of a further several billion more out of poverty, clamouring for a "Western Lifestyle" and following our example.

That's not a convincing argument for not doing anything. At some point, action is required - and it's hardly onerous on homeowners - truth be told, I prefer it - it's neater, and tends to mean I've always got space in bins for "rubbish"

If people don't recognise, now, that whilst current efforts may only be a drop in the ocean, people will never change their thinking and behaviour.

What I really don't get is objections based on it being an effort - it's hardly that, it's just a slight change in behaviour and a minor change when putting refuse in bins.

I intend to. Me and the billions.

I don't try to persuade others not to, only to argue it's largely pointless.
