Shortened seat stays???

Lookafteringypsy

Dirt Disciple
Hi there.
I hope all are well.
I'm just wondering if anyone can help me?
I'm very keen on getting a road bike with shortened seat stays.
I've seen one, but the frame size was too small, (53cm, whereas I need at 58-60, though 56-62 at a push!)

I will try to add a photo of the style I'm after, but please be aware that I'm not an internet god. Ha.

I wonder if anyone is selling such a frame, or knows someone who is, or even which manufacturers made them!?

Thanks in advance, and apologies if I've posted this in the wrong section.

Thanks all, Samuel

Re:

Shaun, thank you very much for your help.
I shall look into your suggestions.
Is 'Shorter' for Alan Shorter?

I'd be very grateful for any further advice or suggestions as to how I can obtain one of these.

Kind regards.
Samuel.

Re:

Gosh Finney, you found that quickly! How did you find it so fast? I've been searching for about two weeks!

How could I find one even closer to the link pic?

Wow, I'm mega impressed with your skills!

Re:

Hilary generally has a varied raft of frames for sale. You could email him with your link picture to see if he knows the whereabouts of any frames for sale?

I found it quickly as I check his site fairly frequently just in case he has something of interest, and remembered he had a couple of Shorter frames.

"Shorter" as in Alan Shorter, the bike shop owner. He had frames built for him with his name on them.......Vic Edwards and Barry Chick spring to mind. Alf Engers rode one.

These frames were part of the movement to Lo-Pro / funny bikes used for time trialling. a bit of a dead end really as they weren't "aerodynamic".

If you want one then it's just a matter of searching or paying for one to be built new.........Kevin Sayles at woodrup would have built a few in his day.

the problem with that style of seatstay is 2 fold , the stays themselves are only attached to thin wall tubing (less strong) and all your weight is trying to crack open the top of the seat tube without the 2 stays providing seat (post) tube support.

Re:

Hi again.
Thanks for your replies.
My budget doesn't currently stretch to having a frame hand built. I assume they may start at perhaps close to £800-£1000 perhaps.

That leaves me only able to try and track one down.
I've considered buying a frame that suits, then getting it adapted.

Thank you also for your advice on the flaws of shortened seat posts.
I will not be using the bicycle for competing, or pushing it hard, though I do plan some nice long trips on it.
I'm not sure if these flaws may only really apply to the frame if I ride it hard!? Also, I'm quite slight. I'm not sure.

On another note, I'd just like to say how great it is to be talking with people whose knowledge of vintage bicycles is quite extraordinary.

Are there any other websites that sell vintage bicycles?

Thanks again.
Samuel
