short cranks + petite people

Just off the off chance, these guys here do a crank shortening service and us at work have used them many of time

you may use them at work so want to give them a plug (and I only write this after a second!) and they may offer a crank shortening service but at over £50 for one bike's worth this is going to be limited to a few very high end specific circumstances, particularly when previous posts identified cranks available off the shelf for half the price (and that ignores the cost of the original cranks you would supply to be shortened so more like a third of the price)

Totally agree and understand where your coming from, I just thought I would address the info on the service just incase yourself or others required the service

For sure Shimano hollowtech are (the clue is in the name), don't know about the rest. I guess you repeat what archimedes did to measure density.

hollowtech - bit too modern so not an issue

would I not also need to know the alloy composition to ascertain its density to establish the presence of an air pocket

Re:

Not a metallurgist but i thought aluminum alloy was mistly aluminium, 90 or even 95 % with some heavy metals thrown in.

You could google typical composition and adjust, cant be that difficult.

According to Highpath's notes, the crank needs to be at least 25mm wide to avoid breakage risks around the pedal. That rules out anything from Shimano after around 1993 (M767, M563 etc, any XTR).

So no need to get the slide rules out about density.

I heard Chris is winding down his operation due to ill health ( get well soon ). He did a great cut down M730 XT crank set from 175 to 153mm for my daughter and I sourced a rare XT 730 165mm set from the US for when she's taller. I have knee sensitivity from arthritis and crank length is critical for me, longer being better !

They are as wide as M730 so work fine - they gave several years service before outgrown. They are now on a disability-adapted tandem.

However, off the shelf Spa cranks are much cheaper if you want something normal. The finish is very good and they run true.
