Shock a billy question..

As you probably know , I am having to go over to a full suspension/soft tail design frame in order to continue to ride, so a few questions for you experts out there ....

Are these any good, How to they compare to a modern Full suspension rig, and what fork would they take ?

What travel are these, any good at climbing ?

Are the risse shocks able to be locked out ?

Your help would be appreciated ..

Si

The suspension on these are AMP B2/ Mongoose Amplifier, they offer about 50-65mm of suspension they're not designed for downhilling but for XC, my B3 is a pleasure to ride, Mr Zero's recently built AMP is one of his favorite bikes, it climbs well, takes the edge off downhills and pedals well on the flat.

The Risse shocks for these are not of the lock out type.

They'll take any fork you want, but personally i'd go for either an AMP one, now getting expensive or a MAG 21.

amp back ends are pretty flexy, the welds were known to crack & the bushes didnt last too long. alignment also wasnt great. chris chance grew so frustrated with the amp back ends on the billys he later built the all steel all fat chance designed SAB.
if you're light, ride smooth & dont give out abuse it'll be fine

Thanks fella, Do you know if they 'bob' around ? affecting the pedal stroke ?

the mac strut type suspension, which is basically copied by bikes like the yeti asr, titus racer x (just a swing link to stiffen up & take side loads off the shock) are essentially descendants of amp. amp execution wasnt great but there ideas are still copied now. bikes like the gary fisher hifi are similiar, but have the swing-link upside down.
depending on what shock gets offered i'd go for the noleen over the amps own shock everytime.
respect is due to amp for still stocking spares long after they stopped producing bikes :)

If you're going full suspension you may as well go modern.

And a Yeti is the only one to consider IMO

Not much travel by modern standards, but they climb like nothing else 8)

The drive side dropout on mine caved in before it would relinquish traction  now it has an extra fillet welded in there by Greg Fuquay to beef it up 8)

Think of them, and ride them, as a comfortable fast rigid and you won't go wrong.

as an added bonus everything is user serviceable, 5 minute job to strip and refil the shock with oil.

Edit: just noticed you asked about SABs....I'm speaking from experience with Amps!

for the hardtail only, hating full suspension brigade, the ASR & racer X are 2 frames that can easily convince the skeptics as they're 2 of the best climbing suspension frames out there (sorry spesky epic doesnt count ;)
