Shimmy RSX 3x7 Brifter Problems - Rebuild or Replace?

Hi all,

Last year I bought a used pair of RSX 3x7 Brifters which have been alright except for one problem. When I want to shift down from the biggest front ring to the middle ring the shifter will leap right down to smaller ring so I then have to change up again. Does anyone know whats causing this?

Its one of those things that doesn't bother me enough to want to strip the shifter down to find out what it is but if someone knows what causing it I can make a decision regarding repairing it or just replacing it when another one comes my way. These aren't the easiest or cheapest shifters to get hold of though neither do they look particularly easy to rebuild.

The wife had the problem with her shifters.
It's a combination of technique and set up. I could get it to shift perfectly 99 times out of 100, she was about 50:50.
Adjusting the limit screws and cable tension fixed the issue.

Rebuilding is not to be taken lightly. Do not undo that big allen bolt at the front!
I had a pair that did as yours do. I flushed them out with contact cleaner to get every scrap of muck and old lube out then soaked them in WD40. good as new

Usually the grease goes hard and a pawl sticks. Mattsccm has the best solution - flush them to soften the grease.

I made the mistake of removing the big bolt on the front soon after getting them. That was the 7 speed side though so not the cause of this problem.

Thanks for the advice, ill give them a good flush out and see what happens.

:) I once rebuilt a nearly brand new DA 9 speed shifter for a customer, with the labour rate, It'd have been cheaper to buy a new one.

hi i assume it changes 'up' twice , middle then outer ring ok !
i recently bought a pair of ultegra 8,s in rely good cosmetic condition £40 from a cycle jumble
the right shifter is ok,m bit tired but works,
the left shifter will not stick on the big ring.
shimano do not do a repair kit for these anymore, does any one know any one in the uk who does a repair service
otherwise ...ship off to a chap on e bay u.s advertising £23 per lever.
conclusions: check them out staight away[,with ebay you are covered]. cycle jumbles.. a written agreement. if the seller isnt sure, move on
