Shimano Uniglide quick question.

I've tried installing a 6 speed uniglide cassette onto what I believe is a later wider hub for 7/8 speeds - The final threaded cog sits inboard of the end of the hub by a good 3-4 mm and it hasn't been tightened down fully yet.

Would a suitable sized spacer placed before the cassette goes on correct this and not give me any chainline/indexing problems? (the gruppo is all 6 speed)

Yes - you should be okay with that.

Your biggest problem is likely to be getting replacement UG sprockets. Highpath do Marchisio sprockets which they adapt to special order.

Yep, I'm only planning to stick with the Uniglide over the winter as I've allready got a good condition cassette - Then hopefully do a hyperglide freehub transplant and upgrade in the spring. I noticed SJS cycles still sell 7-speed uniglide cassettes though.

I'm amazed that SJS still have those! Only three sprocket combinations, mind you. The sprockets are the same as the 6X, except for the threaded top sprocket (ISTR).

Be careful when changing the freehub - you do realise that the cones on the 6401 (??) HG were different to the older UG versions?

^ yep, i think my best be is to buy a cheap complete hyperglide rear hub, and swap everything, freehub, axle, cones, spacers, seals etc. If that will work?

You'd just need to be careful that the nearside hub dust cover would fit the old hub body; I doubt they're all the same, though I expect many are interchangeable. I reckon you'd be unlucky to not be able to get it working somehow.

Depending on the hub, it probably wouldn't cost much more than the freehub anyway!
