STX arm is not compatible with any other rings. It is an odd size/configuration where one ring is bolted to the other. If replacement rings are required, you must either use STX, or switch the entire assembly

To be honest, for the cost you'd likely pay for a new STX chainring these days you could easily find a complete good condition used chainset. Either swap over the chainring you need, or just swap over the whole chainset

It should help with ability to drop from big ring to middle... the slipping could still be down to wear etc. if its still slipping get the chain rings sorted, mixing worn with new will prematurely age the new bits...

also what condition are the jockey wheels in on the rear mech?

i stripped and cleaned, oiled and reassembled the rear mech a few weeks ago, however im not too sure haw to reconise if in poor condition? the wheels where pointed and sharp without any ply and spun freely, so in my amature opintion, i deemed them ok?

I'm no expert but those jockey wheels are toast for sure!

i'll add a pair to my stx list, ive got a spare derailer (not stx) which i will remove and see if they fit, after all what harm could it possibly do.

If you're looking for a nice 94/58 chainset, the Sugino Impels were pretty, as were the Deore LX, XT, etc. from the same time (pre-1999). You could even go for an old Suntour XC Pro, Cannondale Coda, or Specialized crank. A lot of rebadged Suginos under the hood! The RSX chainsets are really nice if you don't mind a 110/74 setup (46/36/26). I actually found this page because I'm running an STX-RC rd with an RSX chainset on my Soma Double Cross. It's really hard to beat the compatibility and availability of 7/8/9/10-speed components. I know I can go to a bike shop 20 years from now and find something that will keep me on the road. Today's "Gravel" components are just an updated version of what was already out there before 10-speed mountain/11-speed road came along.
