As some of you may have seen in a few threads, I've been scanning issues of Dirt and MBUK ('94-99). I found these and as I've never seen them or heard them mentioned on here, I thought I'd share.

Very cool indeed. Wonder if they ever ran these with airlines or did the two not coincide?

Also did they not re use this technology later on city bikes?

Drums force brake shoes outward against the inner surface of the drum, broadly a similar principal to disc brakes. Unfortunately as they're enclosed heat build up cannot disapate and the brakes begin to fade with use. A motorbike brake of the past called a conical hub brake which was drum with air intake scoops was not at all successful, they were often described as 'comical hub brakes'
Roller brakes use a different system involving roller bearing I believe but alas I do not understand it. The cooling fins though help get rid of heat and reduce fade but they're generally no better than canti brakes performance wise hence not seen on mtb's today.

I think they came from the same time frame but don't know if they ever ran the 2 programmes together.

A roller brake should basically never need servicing but this is what one looks like if you take it apart...

Proto only given to Animal Orange's (or was it Giant?) Steve Kitchen back in the day - Shimano gave up on em when they launched their Hydro's......

Nexave ones are a slightly different type but same Idea - Thats from Dirt #2 or 11 if I remember correctly
