What on earth do all though number equate to??????

Any way, bought some XT 2009 from Merlin for half price. God, bad, who knows?

2009 XT = "BR-M775. The best of the monobloc brakes with adjustment-a-plenty "

You'll be happy with them.

XT brakes I've used were like mush at the lever...may have needed setting up/bleeding though as it wasn't my bike!

Would Saint M810s be too full on for a hardtail?

No  The more POWER the easier to stop (in theory).

I didn't think you could have too much power either, just a question as to whether I can handle a little extra weight but more imprtantly if I can afford it! Chain Reaction doing them at £124 each at the moment which when you compare it with some of the Hope stuff doesn't seem to bad a deal.

Kind of want to stick with Shimanos really, Hope sound a tad too fiddly to set up and Avids, well I had a set of Ultimates on a bike a few years ago and the buggers leaked at the levers which isn't good for a brake costing £200 an end!

i have tried and own and use most shimano disc brakes gotta say easy to bleed and feel loverly when you bleed them make sure there are no distractions  8) i have used

1. deore m535 f+r on my orange hitman they where to good for the play bike and rocked.

i still use

1. xt m775 f+r on my on one inbred slot and on my genesis altitude really powerful and good modulation.

2. xtr m975 f+r with ashima gold airotors set up perfectly after facing forks the pistons did get a little sticky after being sat around for a couple of months unused but took 2 minutes to sort out 8)

i hope you get on with the xt's as for the money i rate them as a very good value premium disc brake  :D
