So ive read on the forum about the deore 7 speed thumbies also running 8 speed, and my question is how well do they work with an 8 speed derailleur?

Cheers, Sean :)

they work perfectly well - have been doing so for many, many moons although some have issues, some dont.

set the mech for the 8spd cassette as normal.

then fit thumbie.

make sure you use shimano jockey wheels though. the float helps

Thanks. Im looking at an xt shifter with a 'silent click' is it only the xt shifter that has this?

The Deore 6spd and XT 6spd thumbies can run 7 - SL-MT60 & SL-M730

The DX 7spd and XT 7spd can run 8 - SL-MT62 & SL-M732

I cant remember if my nylon 200GS thumbies did 8 though.

The DNP Epoch 7spd thumbie DX clone can only do 7.

the 'clicks' are usually quite pronounced btw

And fine tune your derailleur so the upper (floating) jockey is centered on the 4th or 5th cog. this will allow the float the jockey has to compensate for the slight spacing difference of the 8 speed cassette on the inner and outer cogs.

" jockey wheels "

What are these jockey wheels you speak of ? :? Is that a horse racing thing :?

Jockey is both a noun and a verb. English: not for the *faint of heart.

* not to be confused with feint.
