was just wondering if you could use a shimano 7 speed cassette with a campy 7 speed rear mech and thumbies?

Yes you can.

Campagnolo 7-speed indexed systems used a uniform 5mm spacing between sprockets, the same as Shimano 7-speed and Campagnolo 8-speed. So Campag thumbies and rear mech (either 7 or 8 speed) will work fine with a Shimano 7-speed cassette.

thanks! that's great news! Now I only have to find an Euclid rear mech for my Peugeot!

Cyclocross dodge to use Campag Ergo (road) levers with Shimano mechs & cassettes.
Don't know how relevant this is here, but you can use Campag 10 speed Ergos with Shimano 8 speed rear end, or with Shimano 9 speed rear end if you re-route the cable attachment slightly.
So with a bit of experimentation, you might find a way to make things work.

welcome to the forum! your info doesn't ad to the initial questoin, but it's very helpful nonetheless cause I allways wanted to build a shimano / campy road bike! Thanks!

Thanks Rio,
Yes I know it's a bit limited here, but it shows that things can be done.
It works on my road bike with Campag Ergo 10 speed levers & Shimano Ultegra 9 speed rear. It doesn't just work, it's perfect.
